Texas Built Its Energy Dominance on Oil and Gas. Now It's Leading the Clean Energy Front.

For decades, "Texas energy" meant two things: oil and gas. That's still a massive part of the state's economy, and the state's energy dominance was built on it. The list has been quietly growing. The 2025-2026 data makes it official: it's no longer two things, it's four, arguably five: oil, gas, wind, solar, and now battery storage. Texas has become the country's largest wind producer, its newest solar leader, and its fastest-growing battery storage market. No state is building faster, on every major clean energy front, at the same time.

Wind: An Advantage Nobody Else Is Close To

Texas has already lapped the field on wind. The state has more installed wind capacity than any other in the country, and in 2023 Texas alone generated 26% of all U.S. wind-sourced electricity (Dallas Fed). That scale shows up in employment too: Texas accounts for 20.8% of the entire U.S. wind-energy workforce (Dallas Fed).

Solar: Texas Just Took California's Crown

This is the headline shift of the past year. For as long as utility-scale solar has mattered in the U.S., California owned it. That changed in 2025. EIA data shows Texas generated 58,634 gigawatt-hours from utility-scale solar in 2025, edging past California's 53,713 gigawatt-hours (Inside Climate News). The gap is set to widen: Texas is projected to account for roughly 40% of all new utility-scale solar built nationwide in 2026 (Energy People Group).

The trend line inside Texas's own grid tells the same story. On ERCOT, solar's share of the generation mix has tripled since 2021, from 4% to 12%, and EIA now projects Texas solar generation will surpass coal generation for the first time in 2026: 78 billion kilowatt-hours from solar versus 60 billion from coal (EIA).

Batteries: The Quietest Takeover of All

Battery storage is where the shift is happening fastest and getting the least attention. Texas entered 2026 with about 13.9 gigawatts of commercially operational grid-scale battery storage, nearly double the 7.8 gigawatts it started 2025 with, after roughly 6 gigawatts came online across 60 new sites in a single year (Modo Energy). That capacity led the nation, passing California for the first time, and Texas is projected to account for 53% of all planned U.S. battery storage additions in 2026 (Energy People Group). National forecasts have Texas holding that lead through the year (Electrek; Houston Public Media).

The Grid Is Already Feeling It

ERCOT is already living this shift. Wind and solar together supplied more than 30% of the grid's electricity in the first nine months of 2025 (Energy Capital). Texas power demand keeps climbing at the same time: EIA forecasts ERCOT demand over the first nine months of 2026 will run 14% above the same nine months of 2025, reaching roughly 425 terawatt-hours (EIA). Renewables are increasingly what's absorbing that growth.

Jobs and Dollars

The build-out translates directly into jobs and revenue. Texas had nearly 15,000 solar generation jobs in 2022, up 11% from the year before, paying an average annual wage above $109,000. Solar generation contributed $877.8 million to the state's GDP in 2021 (Texas Comptroller).
